I just recently hosted a baby shower for a friend and I decided to go with a dinosaur theme. It was going to be a small gathering and I knew I just wanted a fun centerpiece that the mom-to-be could take home with her. I made this very simple Dinosaur Terrarium Garden and here are the easy steps to make your own. This would be great for a shower, dinosaur party, or I know your son would love this in his room!
Step 1: Add dirt to your clear glass bowl. I found this bowl at a thrift store with the opening on the side but a fish bowl would work great too. Always check your thrift store for fish bowls because there are always a TON of them from goldfish pets gone wrong. 🙂 I didn’t use a special type of dirt but I do recommend using a cactus or succulent blend if you are using those plants.
Step 2: Add your plants. I used Jade plant for this project because its low maintenance and then I added a few fake plants in later. When considering which plants to use, think about how much sun light the plants will be getting. If they will be close to a very bright window, you can use succulents or cactus. If they are going to be in a low light, choose a plant that can handle less sun. You can also skip the dirt and use just rock and fake plants only if you don’t want to water it.
Step 3: Add your decorative rocks. I bought these white rocks from Lowes in the garden section and they did a great job keeping the plants in place. You could also spray paint small rocks to match your theme. Go to the “pet fish” section of the store to find fun rocks or other terrarium elements too.
Step 4: Add the dinosaurs. I found some small dinosaurs at the thrift store but wasn’t crazy about their colors for the baby shower. I spray painted them a light blue and I will tell you that it never would totally dry so I ended up painting them with acrylic paint later. I loved how they turned out! If you are doing this for a little boy’s room or dinosaur party, you could probably leave them the original colors because my son liked the realistic colors better anyways.
This project was a hit at the baby shower and now it’s going to be VERY cute in the baby’s dinosaur themed nursery!
Have you ever made a terrarium before? What did you put in it?
