Our son is two now which means that potty training is in full swing. That means night time trips to the potty and getting out of bed more often. I have been having the fun experience of watching him try to go back to bed through the monitor and the other night I saw the light come on. I thought “NOOOOOOO” and ran in there. That began a “light battle” that lasted for several nights.
I tried taping it but I underestimated his abilities to rip it off in two seconds. I was about to go shop for something to cover it when I saw this crystal light container in my craft closet. I cut a strip about the length of the light switch, covered it with washi tape to cover the edges and make it fun, and then my husband screwed it into the holes that are already on the light switch. At least now he can’t turn the light on at night. Cole=0 Mommy=1 🙂
Here are the pictures showing the steps to make your own DIY child proof light switch:
What crazy inventions have you made for your kid’s rooms?
This is such a fantastic idea! My twin girls have been turning on the light after bedtime and running around their room — even keeping up their siblings in other rooms! This took me no more than 5 minutes to rig up. Can’t wait to see how well it works. Thank you so much for sharing this!
My screws go in vertically and my switches are horizontal on a four switch panel. Any suggestions?
Hey Susan! It’s hard to know without a picture but you might have to cover the whole thing! 🙂
Brilliant! Was looking for something to kitty-proof a bathroom light switch, that my cats insist on turning on, when I found this. Going to have to try it myself but maybe minus the washi tape cause I can only imagine what they will do with it!
Haha hey Michelle! I hope it works! Let me know!
I ended up using an empty Lysol wipes container and made it the width of the plate cover to keep wandering paws out. It’s been close to a week and haven’t walked back in find that someone has turned on the light for me! Thanks for the cheap tip!
Hey Michelle! I’m glad its working for you! Saving money is always better too!

What about a three light panel
Is the container that you used plastic or cardboard?
Hey Sara! It was one of the Crystal Light plastic storage containers 🙂
I could have used this at my last apartment. Sadly my neighbor was a nosey nut and constantly turned my outdoor porch light off because I was “wasting electricity”. First, it was a dawn to dusk style light just like hers!. Second, I paid my OWN electric bill. Third, she didn’t work and I did so when I got home I wanted my walkway & door lit up for safety! This is a pretty solution for toddlers & crazy neighbors! Haha. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Paris! Haha yeah that is NOT normal! 🙂 I definitely get you wanting to have your lights on when you got home. I do that too but luckily my light is inside my garage.
Brilliant idea! Something about the light switch is just fascinating but I could do without the flickering lights, lol! Will have to give this one a try!
Hey Emma! Let me know if it works for you. It worked for me for a while and then my son figured it out. Then we started stuffing stuff in there but then we couldn’t turn the light on and off either 🙂
This is a very nifty idea. We are trying to keep our boys , Moses 9 and Solomon 7, from turning lamps on here and there and then turning switches off all over. It’s driving me crazy because we haven’t lived here long enough forme to learn which lights/lamps etc are on which circuit and which light switch. To further complicate this, when my husband’s 89 year old Granny comes to visit, I have to get out the big roll of our masking tape. Maybe this will be a change up. Just one with a million questions to last a whole weeks visit 😉
Let me know if it works…if your kids are like mine they will eventually figure it out but it helps for a while 🙂
Thank you thank you thank you! This little trick was a lifesaver for us last night. My husband and I are forever in your debt 🙂
haha good I’m glad it worked. Ours worked for a while and then we started just turning the light off on the fan and using lamps. Now he doesn’t even get out of bed so there is a light at the end of the tunnel for you 🙂
Thank you, thank you sooooo much!!! I have been looking for something out there in the market to cover my light switch and can’t find it. I have a fire place with a switch down low, and my grandson keeps turning it on. One day I didn’t catch him and I thought the house was on fire. He is also almost two. This is a life saver!!
oh yikes! that’s a little more serious 🙂 Yeah make sure you put it on tight enough or they will be able to get those little fingers in there! Good luck
