DIY Flannel Hand Warmers Upcycle Idea and Sewing Tutorial: the Child at Heart Blog

Every Christmas I want to donate to those who serve my family and community but, like some, I don’t know where to give.   This year I am sharing a very simple way to give to those who really need it!

In the United States, 45 million people are living in poverty and don’t have enough money to buy coats for their entire family.  That’s why I am partnering with Coca-Cola at Walmart to help raise awareness about the One Warm Coat® campaign to give half a million coats to those in need absolutely free!  I donated just $20 and this is enough for them to provide 40 coats to people who need them.  If you are looking for a way to serve this holiday season, click here to give to those that really need some warmth this winter and Layer on Love!  🙂

To celebrate the Layer on the Love campaign with Coca-Cola, I made this really fun tutorial for an upcycle DIY Hand Warmer set made from old pajama pants!  These would be a great gift to give to anyone that has to be outside in the cold this year:  a crossing guard, teachers watching kids at recess, or your mail man!  They are so easy and the perfect project for a beginner.

Supplies:

  • One pair of cotton pajama pants (I got mine from a thrift store for $5 and washed them before the project)
  • Matching thread
  • Pinking shears
  • Rice
  • Pins

The first thing you need to do is make sure the fabric is cotton.  I’ve been told in the comments that some types of other fabrics will NOT get along with your microwave.  Cut your flannel fabric into two 4 inch by 4 inch squares with the pinking shears.

Pin the flannel together with the right sides facing out.  Sew with a zig zag stitch around three sides leaving the fourth side open for the rice.

Scoop in about 1/2 cup of uncooked rice.

Don’t fill it all the way up with rice because you will need some room left to sew the fourth side shut.

Next, pin the fourth side shut and stitch it closed.  I tried to skip pinning this side shut and I had rice all over my sewing machine.  🙂

I put mine in the microwave for about 30 seconds to test them out and they worked great!  Might be making some for myself too!  🙂

If you are wanting to Layer on Love this year, please don’t forget to check out the One Warm Coat® campaign and shop for Coca-Cola products at Walmart to help them give back as well!  It just takes a few seconds to contribute to their goal of half a million coats this year…that’s something I want to be a part of!  You can text to donate, donate a gently used coat, or host your own drive…there are lots of options to choose from!
