DIY Tassel Dreamcatcher Yarn Wall Art Tutorial

One of my favorite things about my baby girl’s room is this huge yarn tassel dreamcatcher wall art. This is actually one of my favorite DIY projects I have ever done!  🙂   We have dreamcatchers in every bedroom in the house because I love the legend of how they protect you from nightmares and only let the good dreams through.  These are great over a bed, above a couch, or any place where you want to take up a large space on the wall.

Here are the steps for how I made mine:

Supplies:  

yarn in various colors

6 to 8 wooden embroidery hoops in various sizes

scissors

First choose your yarn from the craft store.  I would recommend choosing at least 4 colors that coordinate well together.  I was going for a southwest boho vibe in her nursery so I chose these colors and I had some leftovers too!

Next take your wooden embroidery hoops and separate them so that you have 6 individual rings.  I bought three different sizes and I think the largest size was about 14 inches wide.

Now you take your main color, I chose white, and tie it to the wooden hoops and just start wrapping.  How many times you wrap around is up to you but I recommend wrapping it as tight as you can and go around a few times each time you move to a new place so that the yarn doesn’t move from the weight of the tassels.  I didn’t wrap it around too many times because honestly I was getting lazy and was about 8 months pregnant.  🙂

Now start making the tassels…lots and lots and lots of tassels!  Put on a great girly movie and make some popcorn because you are going to be there for a while!

Here is a super easy picture for how I make my tassels but you basically tie a knot around the top, tie a long string around the bundle about a half inch down, wrap it around a bunch, tie a knot, and trim the bottom.  Easy cheesy!

Here is about 1/10 of what you are going to need!  🙂

Now just randomly start tying the tassels onto the yarn of your hoops.  I put them out on the floor to make sure that the colors were spread out and everything was even…and then my dad moved it all to put up some curtains…so I did it again.  🙂  Figure out exactly how you want it to look before you get the hammer and nails out.

When you are done it should look a little something like this:

I posted this yarn wall hanging from our guest room that was made by just looping lots of yarn over a dowel painted with copper paint and I LOVE it.
