I have never been hungry. My husband and my kids have never been hungry. But as a teacher, I know some innocent little kids that have been hungry. Not “I missed my afternoon snack and my tummy is rumbling” but “blurry vision, can’t think, painful” hungry. 1 in 5 kids in America suffer from this everyday and there is something you can do to help.
I am partnering with my local Alberstons in El Paso during the month of September to bring awareness to their “Hunger Is” campaign to stop hunger and provide breakfast for children in the borderlands.
Hunger is so many things: unfair, unjust, unacceptable. Many of us go about our day, eating 3 meals a day plus snacks and our kids are always leaving food on their plates at supper. But for millions of American families, things are so much different. Parents are struggling to put food on the table.
When I was a teacher I had students that struggled with hunger and it affected everything from their behavior to their ability to make friends. I remember one brother and sister in particular that were constantly misbehaving and struggling to learn. I eventually found out at the end of the year that they were both struggling with hunger. They needed breakfast and they are not alone!
Nearly 17 million children in the US struggle with hunger on a daily basis. Alberstons “Hunger Is” campaign is working with other organizations to ensure that children have access to a healthy breakfast. A good breakfast gives kids the strength and energy to succeed and thrive instead of just survive.
Now how can you help? It’s very easy! Purchase one of the products from the wonderful companies that have agreed to donate money to the “Hunger Is” efforts from Albertsons during the month of September. Each purchase will donate a .10 cent donation up to one million dollars from each company participating. You can also donate at the register!
