My son is currently obsessed with Daniel Tiger and has decided that his little friend is an important part of his nap and bedtime rituals. He was always trying to cover up Daniel with his blanket and so I decided he needed his very own sleeping bag! This is a SUPER easy sewing project and would be great as a fun gift for any child. I can imagine some little girls loving a sleeping bag for their favorite doll too. Here’s how I did it:
First, measure the stuffed animal or doll that you are making the sleeping bag for. He was about 14 inches tall by 10 inches wide. |
Next, take whatever fabric you are going to use and cut it to be about four inches wider than the toy. Also cut it where the toy’s head will peep out of the top. This is going to be the “blanket” part of the bag. |
Now that you measured your top or “blanket” piece, cut another piece of corresponding fabric in the exact same size. Then cut two other rectangle pieces for the bottom part of the sleeping bag. These need to be the same width as the first two rectangles and an inch or two taller than the doll or stuffed animal you are making it for. The top right rectangle in this picture is for a small pillow I made to match. |
Now take your two sets of rectangles and put them together with the right sides facing together. I folded this long rectangle for the pillow in half and then stuffed it and sewed around the edges. Easy cheesy! |
Now iron some interfacing to the wrong side of one of the pieces of fabric in each set. This will make the fabric a little sturdier and more “quilt” like. |
Now sew both rectangle sets together right sides facing together, leaving a two or three inch opening to turn them right side out. Turn them right side out, press the corners out really well, and iron and stitch the opening shut. |
Now I sewed an X shape from corner to corner on each rectangle piece to make it look quilted. |
Now it’s all ready to be put together! |
Lay the top “blanket” piece on top of the bottom larger piece. |
Now pin all along the right side and bottom where the two pieces come together. We will leave the left side open so that the stuffed animal or doll can get in and out 🙂 Stitch along the edge and you are done! |
He’s always telling me to be quiet when Daniel Tiger is in his bed 🙂 |
